01 / The essentials

More than an ice bath. A space to come back to you.

A cold plunge is a brief immersion in cold water. Simple in principle, intentional in practice. From a post-workout routine to a quiet moment outdoors, it's a way to bring a different kind of ritual home.

Unlike an ice-filled bathtub, a purpose-built plunge gives you a dedicated space, and models with a chiller hold the water at the temperature you set. Less preparation, more room for consistency.

02 / Why people plunge

A little cold. A different perspective.

Here's the appeal, and what the research actually supports.

Recovery

After a workout

Cold-water immersion may help reduce perceived muscle soreness after exercise. Timing matters, especially if building muscle is your goal.

Alertness

An invigorating moment

Many people say they feel more alert after a plunge. That immediate feeling is not the same as a proven, lasting mental-health benefit.

Routine

A ritual of your own

A dedicated plunge gives you a place to pause and be intentional. Choose a routine that fits your life, not a temperature or time to compete with.

Evidence for benefits to immunity, weight loss, and long-term mood is still limited. Read the Cleveland Clinic's cold plunge guidance.

05 / Your first plunge

Start gently. Make it intentional.

You don't need to go colder or stay longer to prove anything. Your first priority is a safe, comfortable introduction.

01

Check in first

Ask a healthcare professional whether cold immersion is right for you, especially if you have a heart condition or other health concerns.

02

Prepare your space

Use a stable, accessible tub. Keep a towel nearby, keep the exit clear, and have someone with you.

03

Ease into the cold

Enter gradually, keep your head above water, and breathe normally. Avoid holding your breath or hyperventilating.

04

Listen, then warm up

Keep it brief. Get out if you feel unwell, then dry off and warm up gradually. Never ignore warning signs.

Cold is powerful. Treat it with respect.Cold shock can cause gasping and a rapid rise in heart rate and blood pressure. Never plunge alone or after drinking alcohol. This guide is educational, not medical advice. Always consult with your doctor if you have any serious health questions. Read Harvard Health's safety guidance.
06 / The other half of your ritual

The warmth of a sauna. The clarity of cold.

Build a wellness space with both ends of the spectrum. A sauna and a cold plunge offer two distinct experiences, designed around how you like to unwind.

Switching between heat and cold puts additional stress on your heart. Get medical guidance before trying contrast therapy and avoid abrupt, extreme temperature changes.

What is a cold plunge?

A cold plunge is a short immersion in cold water, usually in a dedicated tub, an ice bath, or another controlled setting. A purpose-built tub with a chiller lets you manage water temperature without relying on bags of ice. It is a wellness practice, not a treatment or a substitute for medical care.

How cold should a cold plunge be?

There is no single temperature that is right for everyone, and colder is not automatically better. Beginners should start conservatively, ask a healthcare professional about personal risks, and follow their tub's instructions. Never chase a temperature target at the expense of comfort or safety.

How long should you cold plunge?

There is no universal safe duration. Temperature, experience, health, and individual response all matter. Start with a brief exposure rather than a long session, and get out right away if you feel dizzy, numb, unwell, or unable to control your breathing.

What are the benefits of a cold plunge?

Cold-water immersion may help reduce perceived muscle soreness after exercise, and some people feel more alert afterward. Evidence for lasting improvements in mood, immunity, weight loss, or overall health is still limited. Regular cold immersion right after strength training may interfere with muscle-building adaptations.

Can I use a cold plunge after a sauna?

Some people pair sauna sessions and cold immersion as contrast therapy. Moving abruptly between heat and cold can stress the cardiovascular system, so get medical advice first, allow yourself to cool down, and avoid extreme temperatures. Always consult with your doctor if you have any serious health questions.

Do I need a chiller, or can I use ice?

Ice can cool a basic tub, but it needs replenishing and gives you less precise control. The Salus Saunas Ice Bath is designed for a simple water-and-ice fill. The Snowpiercer and Dynamic include a 1 HP cold/heat chiller with Wi-Fi control that holds the temperature you set; check each product page for current inclusions.

What should I check before installing a cold plunge?

Confirm your available space, the filled weight and surface support, drainage, service access, and weather exposure. Chiller models such as the Snowpiercer and Dynamic need a dedicated 120 V, 15 amp outlet with GFCI protection. Follow the owner's manual and use a qualified electrician when needed.

Where does Salus Saunas ship cold plunges?

The Ice Bath, Snowpiercer, and Dynamic include free curbside shipping to the 48 contiguous United States. Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and island deliveries may require a custom quote or additional fees. Confirm current delivery timing and availability with Salus before ordering.
